Hawai’i Tropical Bioreserve & Garden was established as a Scientific & Educational nonprofit in 1984 with clear guidelines ensuring the land will never be sold or commercially developed. The Founders, Dan and Pauline Lutkenhouse contributed their undivided time and energy to establish the Garden. The garden is marking its 40th anniversary this year by committing to “creating a living experience that everyone can benefit from.” The garden was created through the untiring efforts of one man, Dan Lutkenhouse Sr., who discovered Onomea Valley while on vacation with his wife Pauline in 1977. The garden was created by Dan and Pauline Lutkenhouse who discovered the beautiful 17-acre parcel in 1977.

They purchased an old “vacation house” on the Hilo side of the island with plans to return often to visit and renovate the old house. “Dan and Pauline Lutkenhouse found the valley as an overgrown jungle and dumping ground and created a self-sustaining nature preserve and garden enjoyed by 100,000 visitors each year,” said Tan. “I hope that I, too, in my own way, can contribute to making this gem shine even brighter.” Lutkenhouse is survived by wife Pauline, son Dan, daughter Debara Frost, sister Jean Rex, sister-in-law Lois Lutkenhouse and four grandchildren. In June 1977, Dan and his wife Pauline R. Lutkenhouse (1928-2017) visited the Big Island of Hawaii for the first time. They were shown the property on Onomea Bay, seven miles (11 km) northeast of Hilo, that has since become Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. Dan and Pauline were captivated by the seclusion and beauty of the place. A nonprofit organization, the botanical garden was founded by Dan and Pauline Lutkenhouse with the mission of being a living seed bank for over 2,000 tropical and subtropical species—many of them endangered—from around the world, including heliconia, gingers, palms and orchids. Pauline was born February 10, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio where she also grew up. She was the youngest of ten siblings.

The garden was created through the untiring efforts of one man, Dan Lutkenhouse Sr., who discovered Onomea Valley while on vacation with his wife Pauline in 1977.
