I dyed a cheapo rosewood fretboard with black stain before, worked pretty good. Just clean it with some rubbing alcohol before you stain it Also, people tend to say you should sand it lightly before you apply the stain but I found that the stain tends to stick to the scratched surface on the binding and fret markers and it's quite a pita to clean it off again.
So yeah, new Jatoba looks like ****, aged though it looks awesome. Jatoba is very hard and heavy. It should make a fine fretboard. It will make a pretty stiff, heavy neck but I am not telling you anything you wouldn't already know.

My Jatoba fretboard has darkened nicely and is now darker than my rosewood fretboards. Compared to rosewood it will be less brown but more of a reddish, almost blood-like tone though. So yeah, new Jatoba looks like ****, aged though it looks awesome. Jatoba is very hard and heavy.
The light colored wood does not look good on this guitar so I'd like to try staining it with iron acetate. I've pulled the old frets and sanded everything down with a radiused sanding beam. The iron acetate was made by

My Jr just arrived with Jatoba. Thirstiest grainest fretboard I've ever had. I oiled it once a day all last week and it took about 5 days before the fretboard oil didn't immediately just disappear into the board. It went from a brightish pink to a normal ish looking red rosewood.
